A clear planning sequence

One blank template, from intention to access.

The prompts distinguish what learners will work towards, what they can demonstrate and what evidence will make progress visible. Representation and access prompts leave room for more than one way into the mathematics.

  1. Lesson title

Name the mathematical concept or problem.

  2. Objective

Set a specific, learner-centred intention with an observable action and SMART framing.

  3. Measurable outcome

Describe what learners can demonstrate at a defined endpoint.

  4. Success criteria

Make the evidence of learning visible and checkable.

  5. Key vocabulary

Plan terms to explore or revisit before formal instruction.

  6. Starter

Plan a brief opening for prior knowledge, vocabulary or starting ideas.

  7. Real-world or careers link

Connect the mathematics to a relevant context, task or career.

  8. Representations

Consider physical materials, visual models or diagrams, then symbolic notation.

  9. Learner access

Plan options, including non-visual alternatives, for accessing and expressing the mathematics.
